Inherent Vice (15) Verdict: Inherent? Incoherent, more like Rating: Paul Thomas Anderson might not be on a mission to divide opinion, but he could hardly be doing a better job. His new film — a noir-ish semi-comedy based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel about a drug-addled private eye in California at the turn of the Seventies — has already been acclaimed by some as a work of genius, and by others as an exercise so opaque that it’s questionable whether the writer-director himself quite understands what’s going on. Perhaps it’s a little of both. However, for those of us who cleave to the old-fashioned view that narratives should be vaguely penetrable, the film might as well be retitled Incoherent Vice. Joaquin Phoenix (pictured) plays private investigator Doc Sportello in Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice From the first minute to the distant 149th, I was at least as mystified as private investigator Doc Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix). And he has the benefit of seeing his world through a more or less permanent narcotic haze, which might be the only way to make sense of it. Anderson doesn’t make many films, which could be why he so indulges himself when he does. This is only his second since the marvellous There Will Be Blood in 2007, and it revisits the period he evoked so brilliantly in Boogie Nights (1997). But, great fun as it very sporadically is, it is no match for either. For Angelina, see the movie 'Foxfire'. I like the movie itself as well, being a good coming of age, girl-power movie. But, on the purely prurient front, there's a good scene where the girls all get tattoos in the chestal area, so they all get topless. Sunday, June 5, 2011. Word Mojo Gold Online Game FreePlay Word Mojo Gold Online FreeShare Sportello is a very 1970 kind of private eye, with sideburns hairy enough to stuff cushions with and cannabis in his veins. When an ex-girlfriend comes to him with a story about a plot to kidnap her rich, married lover, he gets sucked into a saga involving neo-Nazis, drug cartels and police brutality that is complicated to start with, and quickly becomes incomprehensible. Still, the casting makes sense. A bonkers plot adapted by a bonkers director from a bonkers novel demands a bonkers actor, and Phoenix fits the bill perfectly. He’s marvellous, and with Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro along for what is a trip in more ways than one, he’s in grade-A company, too — although if anyone steals scenes from under Sportello’s coke-stuffed nose, it’s Josh Brolin, playing a tyrannical la cop nicknamed Bigfoot. With 30 minutes off the running time, and 40 per cent more lucidity of plot and dialogue, Inherent Vice could have been 50 per cent more enjoyable. Inherent Vice Word Mojo Gold Online For MacAs it is, this time I’m on the other side of the great Anderson divide. I really wouldn’t want to sit through this again, not even in a bid to understand it. Tony, I wandered into Pynchon over decades now and then. I'm glad I waited to finally read 'Gravity,' as the earlier 'V.' And later 'Against the Day' prepared me better. Don’t search for the best Fall sales.
